Feet, not Inches

Over the past 16 years, annual rainfall in our area has averaged 183 inches. That’s a little over 15 feet. On average, most of this rain comes in the months of August through October, with 25-31 inches, or more than 2 feet, of rainfall each month.

So far this year we’ve had 134 inches (11 feet) and we’re two weeks away from August.

Some days, the standard 5-inch rain gauge doesn’t hack it.

Just saying.

    Yikes. Feeling a bit soggy?

  2. The town of Tully in northern Queensland gets something like 25 feet of rain a year, but sounds like you’re on route to setting some kind of wet record. Hmm, sounds like rain gear may be in order for my Costa Rican field trip in November is this trend continues.

Shelley – Luckily, the mornings this past week have been sunny and dry, with humidity dropping to roughly 50%, so soggy feelings dry out then, just in time for the sky to open in the afternoon.

Phytophactor – Well, well. Is Tully the wettest town in all the world? Of course, at the rate we’re going, we may reach their average before the year is out. The current La Niña conditions were last predicted to last through August. Who’s to say how long this situation will last. The only thing we know is that it won’t last forever.
